A long time ago, the first people who ever used high heels (probably) were prostitutes. Did they use them with the intention of looking stylish like women do now? No. The reason for them wearing high heels back then is to lure customers in and to literally get a-head of competition. If you wore high heels as a prostitute back in the good old days, you’d need some sort of ingenious way to spot potential customers easily. High heels was the answer to that. With that being said, high heels back then were primitive and not the ones that you would imagine today.
In the Middle Ages, both men and women wore high heels. Men in particular had a not-so-glorious reason for wearing high heels. They wore them to literally keep themselves away from animal manure in the streets. Talk about hygiene! At that time, men wore thicker heeled shoes to differentiate theirs from women’s shoes. As for the ladies, they wore thinner and longer heels that you can see today. Although men had their own purposes for wearing high heels, women wore them as protest to the unfair treatment given to them at that time.
