Throughout history, there have been high heeled artifacts found across the globe. However, the origin of high heels, its first usage, and who invented it will perhaps never be found. On the other hand, there are various accounts of high heels being used throughout different timelines.
In mediaeval Europe, the people used wooden-soled shoes that they used to ride horses better. These shoes were the predecessors of the high heels that we know today. Some accounts point to Venice where prostitutes used wooden shoes with 18-inch heels (Chopines) for their profession.
In 1670, King Louie XIV gave birth to the gorgeous red bottom shoes that we know of today. This has sprung the trend of red heeled and red bottomed high heeled shoes. The red color often denotes royalty and prestige. Nowadays, it is still worn by famous people and normal individuals as well.
During the 1950’s, the high heeled fashion came back to life after an up and down climb through history’s pages. Some believe that pornographers had the idea of using high heels as props to market their nude models. A couple of years later, Christian Dior revolutionized the start of a new trend and thus began the love for high heels to this date.
